there are several tracks types you can use to define a track, "music", "music2", "jingle" etc. is there a way to add new ones?

No, that list is currently fixed. There are over 60 media entry types available, including User1 to User9.
For what you need more/other types, resp. what types are missing?

i play a lot of promotion tracks. Sometimes pre-releases. i'd want a track type called "promotional" which i can then colour code. ii get there are track types named "user n" but if someone else were to cover my programme they might not understand the significance.

You could use „Promo“ for it?!
Promo is a short name for Promotion.

"promo" is is already used for show promos.

As said, the list of media entry types is fixed, so you can (only) select from any existing type.
